About me
Kate Murphy
MSW, LCSWA, CYT
I’m passionate about working with adults seeking to reimagine their lives, reconnect to their values, and deepen their sense of clarity, connection, and contentment. We all want the same things… to feel safe, valued, and connected to ourselves and others.
In my early twenties, while in school earning a Master’s in Speech Language Pathology, I developed an autoimmune disease. A long, confusing road to diagnosis and treatment taught me a great deal about grief, uncertainty, and the mind-body connection.
In the end, it made me a much happier person. Why? Because the added stress of having a physical illness forced me to confront parts of myself and my life that weren’t working for me. The new constraints on my body made those things impossible to keep ignoring. It pushed me to approach the discomfort of change.
My experience with chronic illness inspired me to become a talk therapist to help others through the many highs and lows of life. I earned a Master’s of Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill and started my own practice so I could pursue that goal while maintaining a healthy work-life balance that supports my own health.
When I’m not wearing my therapist hat, I’m likely to be seeking out a fresh, flaky chocolate croissant and a cappuccino (decaf if it’s the afternoon). I might be outside somewhere gazing at a pretty leaf or, even more likely, through either of my dogs’ unruly eyebrows and into their sweet, loving eyes. Sometimes I’m out for a walk, accepting the reliable invitation of the fresh air to zoom out of any one feeling or part of my life and reconnect to the whole. Unless it’s July or August — then I’m probably inside on the couch, eyes up at the newest sitcom or Downtown Abbey-esque period piece, or down at my laptop planning upcoming travels.
Are we a good fit?
Therapy is most effective when the relationship between therapist and client is a good fit.
If you're wondering whether we'd work well together, here's what you can expect from me—and what I ask of my clients.
